Sustainability Advisory Services
KPMG can help you develop a sound sustainability strategy
Sustainability is about recognising the interdependence of environmental, social and economic factors affecting the organisation. Identifying these factors and developing a strategic response can be difficult.
As a supporting member of KPMG's Global Sustainabiltiy Services (GSS), we are well equipped to help you develop your sustainability strategy. GSS is a dedicated KPMG network offering environmental and sustainability services with 350 social and environmental professionals in more than 30 countries. It uses a range of global methodologies and tools, and local knowledge, to enhance client outcomes.
We can utilise GSS and our own multidisciplinary approach to help you develop your sustainability strategy. Our services include:
- assessments of enterprise risk and governance;
- tax issues associated with climate change and environmental initiatives;
- accounting under the NZ ETS;
- sustainability reporting advisory; and
- thought leadership materials (see links on the right).
What is sustainability?
Sustainability is an increasingly misunderstood term. It is most often applied in the context of environmental issues and is used interchangeably with terms like 'corporate social responsibility' and 'corporate citizenship'. Without a clear understanding, it is no wonder that the business response to perceived sustainability 'issues' is often ad hoc and uncoordinated.
Sustainability from a business perspective is wider than environmental concerns; you also need to identify social and economic factors affecting your organisation. Integrating these factors into a strategic response can be difficult.
Sustainability requires a governance response
What does sustainability mean for you?
Are you calculating your organisation's carbon footprint, with the intention of becoming carbon neutral, or does your organisation give time or funds to charity? Actions like these should be incorporated into a sustainability strategy; they gain real power as drivers of organisational performance when seen as part of a broader strategic response.
What social, environmental and economic issues are important for your organisation? To determine these you need to understand your business, your industry and what your stakeholders think is important. Formulate these issues into a set of strategic objectives to drive organisational actions. This is the starting point for a coordinated sustainability response.
